Our client is a Contemporary art gallery founded in Lagos that recently opened a new space in Los Angeles. They represent and exhibit emerging and established artists working across diverse media in Africa and the diaspora and aim to promote, engage and make art from Africa more accessible internationally.
The gallery participates in international art events and fairs and is now looking for an Associate Director to join the team in their Los Angeles space.
Job specifications:
- Work closely with the founder to manage the gallery as well as the teams in LA and Lagos
- Sales and business development
- Work strategically to put systems in place to efficiently run galleries
- Oversee exhibition planning and programming including supporting curation of exhibitions
- Contribute to the program of the gallery
- Attendance at gallery meetings as a senior member of the team
- Maintain an exemplary working knowledge of the gallery and its current, historical and upcoming exhibitions
- Undertake other duties, as and when required to ensure the smooth running of the gallery
- Manage the gallery’s sales pipeline and utilise its CRM system to maximise sales
- Maintain and develop new client relations through networking at events and fairs
Candidate specifications:
- Previous experience in a leadership position and running a gallery with a strong track record managing other gallery personnel
- Established network
- Proven sales experience
- Passionate about and wanting to champion African art
- Fresh perspective and looking to make a difference and be an integral part of the gallery’s growth
- Able to work collaboratively and with a long distance team
- At least 5 years experience in a relevant role
- Knowledge of contemporary art and ideally previous experience working with contemporary African Art
- Ambitious and self-directed working style
- Excellent communicator with great writing skills
- Other languages ideal but not essential
Salary: DOE USD80-100K + commission on sales
Role will report to the Founder who is also LA based

Note: Galleries will have to work together as most of the art will come from Nigeria/Africa and will be processed through the Lagos gallery who then will ship to LA.
