We are on the hunt for a Technician to work with a Blue Chip Contemporary Art Gallery in New York.

Position overview

The role of New York Technician will report to the Senior Technician and under his / her guidance is responsible for the handling, packing, condition checking and installation of artworks of varied media at the gallery, client houses, and, where appropriate, art fairs. The role is a full-time position; however, overtime will be required during installation periods.

Key priorities of the role include, but are not limited to:

  • Daily, general gallery upkeep and maintenance of the gallery (interior and exterior) and viewing rooms/offices.
  • Handling and installing artworks for exhibitions, art fairs, photography, viewing rooms, and client houses.
  • Packing and condition checking of artworks for art fairs and exhibitions.
  • Cataloguing artwork into gallery database, ensuring the database is kept up to date and accurate.
  • Conduct condition checks for various types of artwork: identifying, noting, and documenting conditions with appropriate language.
  • Ensure gallery database information is always up to date and accurate.
  • Supporting in-house and external photography.
  • Offsite help for storage, client services, site visits, photography, and art fairs.
  • Recording movement of artworks on and off-site.
  • Locating artworks in storage areas.
  • Intercompany shipments between NY and London.
  • Complete any other ad hoc tasks and projects as necessary.

Key skills/highly desirable attributes include:

  • A minimum of 3 years experience in art handling in a gallery, auction house, artist, or museum setting including shipping, handling, packing, and storage.
  • Knowledge of best practices and materials for handling and packing artwork.
  • Must have a diverse understanding of different mediums and materials and experience installing a wide range of artworks, including large sculptures, media-based artworks, etc.
  • Ability to manage a personal busy workload and keep calm when under pressure
  • Proactive attitude with a willingness to learn
  • Proven problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to be an ambassador for gallery
  • Ability to work creatively, effectively, and efficiently independently and as part of a team.
  • Experience working with databases & condition checking software
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Attention to detail
  • Valid driver’s license (preferable)

The position is Tuesday – Saturday, T-F 8:30 am – 5:00 pm, Saturday hours 9:30 am – 6:00 pm. Applicants must be flexible and available to work outside of designated workdays on an as-needed basis.

Salary: $50-70k dependent on experience plus overtime
