We are on the hunt for an Asia-based Sales Director to work with a major American Gallery.
Our client, a major gallery of contemporary and modern art based in Los Angeles, is seeking a Sales Director to be based in China and serve as the gallery’s primary correspondent between the Asia Pacific region and the gallery, expanding the program’s geographical reach, foremost through a sales approach. Fluency in Mandarin is essential.
With Senior Director/Partner, guide strategy for gallery presence within the Asia Pacific (AP) region
Act as the primary point of contact for business matters in China, working with the Managing Director and Director of Finance.
Develop and maintain active relationships with collectors, curators, press, and other VIPs across AP region, traveling locally and regionally as needed
Participate in executive-level meetings concerning AP region
Serve as point of reference for all AP inquires, both internal and external
Travel to the gallery’s Los Angeles headquarters for some exhibition openings and events
Develop and retain in-depth knowledge of gallery artists’ practices and biographies, as well as the private and public collections that own their work, through constant research (reading press/publications, attending lectures, visiting studios, reviewing inventory in database, traveling to artist exhibition openings as needed, etc.)
Recognize and acknowledge the individual names and faces of collectors, curators, critics, and press while providing an interface with them
Communicate artists’ practices and biographies to clients, curators, press, and the public in an articulate, professional manner, with a focus on educating AP clients about the gallery’s artists
With Senior Director, develop sales strategies for AP region and evaluate results
Meet quarterly sales goals
Maintain clear and consistent logs of sales, interest, and client communication
Cultivate and maintain active client relationships both within AP region and beyond
Prepare for and contribute to weekly sales meetings, and proactively update sales team on sales activity outside meetings, sharing important client information and interests
Cultivate a presence for the gallery externally by attending openings, events, etc.
With Senior Director, oversee fairs in AP region, directing planning and evaluating results
Travel to all AP and European art fairs in which the gallery is participating, in a sales and logistics capacity, arriving in advance and staying after conclusion for outreach as needed
Actively source & research opportunities for the promotion of the gallery and the gallery’s artists across the AP region, including fairs, special projects, commissions, collaborations, and gallery and museum exhibitions, press opportunities, etc.
Maintain a pipeline of such business development opportunities and follow up on noted interest from AP clients (private & institutional) regarding such opportunities, recommending participation and reviewing with the Senior Director
Develop secondary market sales in the region
Salary USD 100,000 – 125,000 based on experience plus commission
